FAQs
What is Reiki?
Reiki is an ancient Japanese form of holistic healing. Reiki (pronounced ‘ray key’) means ‘universal life energy’ – this is the energy that exists in all things. This energy is known by different names including Chi in Chinese culture, Prana in Hindu, and healing light in Christian teachings. Everything that has life contains Reiki energy and it can be channelled by a Reiki practitioner to promote the body’s natural healing ability.
A Reiki practitioner has been attuned to access this energy and channel it by placing their hands on the recipient. Reiki energy will flow where it is needed the most in the recipient’s body to release blocked energy, flush out toxins, and bring balance to their physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual states.
Reiki does not replace conventional medicine, however, it is a complementary practice that can help to ease pain and aid in the healing process whilst bringing relaxation and a feeling of overall wellbeing.
Who is Reiki suitable for?
Reiki is a safe, natural, non-invasive complementary therapy for people with acute and chronic health conditions. Reiki healing is suitable for anyone from the womb until death. For those in good health, it acts as a tonic to maintain positive health and wellbeing, strengthening the body energetically and spiritually.
What can I expect in a Reiki healing session?
Unlike most massage therapies, you can remain fully clothed during a Reiki session. You will lie down on a massage table, with a blanket and pillow if you find this comfortable. I will place my hands on your body working from your head to your feet and let the Reiki energy flow from my hands into your body. For certain areas I may use the ‘hands-off’ technique rather than placing my hands directly on you. Please rest assured that I maintain the utmost respect for your body and ensuring you feel comfortable is my primary concern – I will avoid placing my hands on any private areas. If there is anywhere that is particularly sensitive or painful on your body, or anywhere you would prefer me not to touch, then please let me know at the beginning of our session and I will work around this. Reiki energy will flow where it is needed in the body, and it is still highly effective if I use the ‘hands-off’ technique.
Receiving Reiki healing is unique to each person and everyone feels the energy differently. You may feel warmth, coolness, or tingling in the area I’m working on. Some people see colours or visions during a healing session. Some people may not feel or see anything – this is also perfectly normal and doesn’t mean that the healing isn’t working!
Most people have a deep sense of relaxation from Reiki – it may even make you fall asleep! Rest assured if you do nod off during our session this is absolutely fine and I will gently bring you back round once the session is complete.
I generally try not to speak during our session, and encourage you to do the same so you can enjoy some quiet time without the need for speaking or thinking. After our session, I will ask you for any feedback you wish to share on anything you felt during the healing. I will also share with you any feedback I have that can support your ongoing healing journey, flagging any particular areas where I have felt energetic blocks or issues that need working on.
I’m in a wheelchair or have limited mobility, is the therapy room accessible?
My therapy room is in a bedroom on the first-floor, which is only accessible via a staircase. If this is not suitable for your needs, I can come to your home if you are based in Cirencester or the surrounding areas. Alternatively, I can also offer a distance Reiki healing session which can be done over Zoom or Teams.
Are there any side-effects from Reiki?
Every person will experience their Reiki healing differently. And as with all holistic therapies, every client will respond differently to their treatment. After receiving Reiki you may feel deeply relaxed or energised. Some people also experience an emotional release. Sometimes people may experience ‘detox’ type effects after a Reiki session – this is part of the body’s natural healing process, clearing blockages and bringing the body back into balance and wellness.
